Ideally, we desire a fair society. One that is just, true, and equal. I love the idea of living in a country that allows me as a journalist to express myself in any way I wish to.
The recent Obama victory has instilled in me a new hope, as it has for millions of Americans. We are living in history and the state of our union I believe was a catalyst for the change that has finally come. YES WE DID!!! But we must continue to embrace democracy and be politically active even when it's not election season. I try not to focus on the negative aspect of things. But, I noticed something recently.
Here's what I started thinking about after the euphoria died down: McCain actually got 48% of the national vote. That's A LOT of votes people. That means that even though history was made, some Americans still voted to continue the status quo, and actually meant to keep this country in its 8-year-rut of stagnant despair! They didn't want change, despite the ongoing Iraq war (which almost killed my younger brother), the steadily sinking economy, the subprime mortgage crisis, and the loss of approximately 1.5 million jobs in this country. Suffice it to say, those voters would trust a half-dead geriatric warmonger and redneck ass Sarah Palin (aka George Bush in drag) to govern us and save our country. I know many people who were considering leaving the country if the GOP prevailed, including myself.
One thing was clear: we still have a long way to go. Equality is still a stretch. Racism is still very prevalent. As Obama said, this is only the beginning of the change we seek. Even he knows there is much to do. And please, don't think this is just some pessimistic rant. I'm overjoyed that Obama is now our President-elect, and along with the world, I clapped, cheered and cried at the sheer joy of the event on Election Night. But I'm a realist, plain and simple. And I'm a member of the media as well...so I do see things from a certain perspective. I just want to know...what's it going to take to rid this country of those that actually believed that Obama was an Arab and a terrorist? I was at a party a while ago and some guy was calling our new president an ELITIST. Good lord...I just can't figure that out. McCain and his filthy-rich Budweiser heiress wife are swimming in cash and living in their SEVEN homes and Obama is an elitist?? Okay, you got me. I'm just angry about those things, and you may think I'm making too much of this, put the fact remains. We may have won the battle, but the war is not yet over.
